Chatting With: Cher Teoh, Head Of Business Development At Comfort Co

Hi Cher Teoh, thank you for doing this interview. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Hey! Thank you so much for having me. My name is Cher, and I am the Head of Business Development at Comfort Co and proud mummy to my 3-year old daughter.  I love sleep (don’t we all) and have always believed that sleep is an integral part of our well-being. Backed by our company’s 18 years of experience in creating quality sleep products, we launched our latest signature Miragel range of pillows this year, with the aim of bringing good sleep to all Malaysians.

Tell us why sleep is important and what happens when you don’t get enough sleep?

While some may say that sleep is just sleep, a good night’s sleep is to me, fundamental to our happiness and well-being in general. It impacts our physical, mental and emotional health, thereby affecting our daily living and the people around us too.

In times such as the new norm that we now live in, we need a healthy body to fight all kinds of illnesses, and more than ever, we need good emotional and mental health to deal with the high stress that’s related to the pandemic and the ways our lives have changed from it. This is even more so for parents as we juggle childcare, work, and schooling demands which can be overwhelming.

Children are keen observers and can easily notice and react to stress in their parents or caregivers. Self-care should be prioritised although it may seem counter-intuitive at times because the best thing parents can do is to take good care of themselves and to model healthy ways of coping with stress or anxiety. And one of the best ways to do that is to ensure we eat well and rest well.

How much do pillows affect the quality of sleep?

What a good pillow does for your sleep is like what healthy food does for your body.

Getting good sleep is something we all deserve every single night without fail. I believe that for our bodies to rest well, a pillow should be 2 things: comfortable and supportive at the same time.

We need to feel comfortable so we can be at ease and able to relax after a long day. And in order to support us through the night, we need a pillow that gives the right support for our body as we sleep – so we can enter into a state of deep sleep – the essential part of sleep that makes us feel refreshed when we wake up the next day.

Many of us overlook the importance of having a good pillow, but if I tell you, you’re likely to spend 25 full years of your life sleeping, you might think differently. Investing in a good pillow is as important as eating healthy food. You are what you sleep, after all.

What are the advantages of firm pillows over soft pillows and vice versa? When is it better to use one over the other?

The most asked question to me has to be what the perfect pillow is. My answer to that is, there is no such pillow. Simply because, what is perfect for me, may not be perfect for you since we are all different and we sleep differently.

The simple rule of thumb is that – if our neck is bent in any way for an extended period of time, we will get uncomfortable. So, in that sense, a pillow that is too soft or too firm can both lead to neck pain depending on your sleeping posture and how the pillow is used.

As an example, if you are a side sleeper, and you use a soft pillow that does not provide enough support under your neck, then your neck will be bent as your head extends sideways to meet the pillow. On the other hand, if you tend to sleep on your stomach, which is a position that hyperextends the neck backwards, then using a firm pillow pushes the head back even farther.

Hence, the goal then is to find a pillow that fits our individual sleep patterns and physique. This, however, is the usual challenge when buying pillows. In recognising this, we advocate that the best way is to sleep on the pillow so you will know for sure if it suits you. Therefore, all our Miragel signature products come with a risk-free 30 nights trial to allow you to try it in the comfort of your own home.

Comfort Co also sells pillows for pre-teens and toddlers. Apart from their size differences, walk us through what goes into producing pillows that aren’t for adults?

We genuinely believe that sleeping right starts young. A child grows from infancy to their teenage years in stages and at each stage, their sleeping needs change as they grow. During these formative years, they need the right type of support for their young bodies, so that their neck and spine are properly aligned as they rest. A good nights’ sleep provides for better brain development, a healthy body and good emotional well-being. Especially in the new norm, as I have mentioned earlier, these are more important than ever before. Being parents ourselves, we know that a happy, well-rested child will make for happy mummies and daddies too!

We’ve noticed that today’s market offering lacks good sleep products catered for pre-teens and children, and it is our aim to bridge this gap. The Miragel Kids range is specially designed with children’s body sizes in mind, and they are available in 2 children sizes made for toddlers (ages 3-6) to pre-teens (ages 7-12).
