Caroll Spinney, The Puppeteer Who Played Big Bird and Oscar The Grouch, Dies.

Caroll Spinney who played Big Bird and Oscar The Grouch on Sesame Street passed away at his home in Connecticut. He has been with Sesame Street since the very beginning, 1969. Caroll Spinney previously spoke of the significance Sesame Street had in his life. He said, “Before I came to ‘Sesame Street’, I didn’t feel like what I was doing was important. Big Bird helped me find my purpose.”

Caroll was an artistic genius whose kind and loving view of the world helped shape and define Sesame Street from its earliest days in 1969 through five decades, and his legacy here at Sesame Workshop and in the cultural firmament will be unending. His enormous talent and outsized heart were perfectly suited to playing the larger-than-life yellow bird who brought joy to generations of children and countless fans of all ages around the world, and his lovably cantankerous grouch gave us all permission to be cranky once in a whileSesame Street

We were in the midst of editing a video on Fred Rogers when we heard the news. Standing beside the Big Bird in the picture below is Fred Rogers. Rest in peace, legends. Thank you for making many of our childhoods here so much more meaningful and happier.
