Spotlight: Autism Behavioral Center (ABC)

The Largest Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Center In Malaysia

ABC – Autism Behavioral Center is Malaysia’s leading provider of evidence-based, early intervention programs for young children with autism. To date, ABC is the largest Applied Behavior Analysis center in Malaysia and rightly so. ABC houses over 40 individual therapy rooms at its center. What’s more, each therapy room is staffed by one experienced therapist. The goal of this is to ensure the child receives superior one-on-one therapy in her room with a certified therapist.

The idea of ABC was conceived with the objective of bringing international standards and high quality of support and supervision in ABA therapy to Malaysia.” – Charlene Marie Samuel

Charlene is a trained ABA therapist who had been working with children on the spectrum in Malaysia for over 10 years. She holds a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) from HELP University College as well as certificates in Special Education Needs and Learning Disabilities. Despite her busy schedule, Charlene is currently pursuing her Masters in Education, majoring in Early Childhood Education (MEd-ECE).

We aim to be a home-grown name in autism intervention and treatment, opening next in Nilai, Cyberjaya, Johor, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak” – Charlene Marie Samuel

Dedicated Team Of Experienced And Certified Therapists

ABC is staffed by a dedicated team of experienced therapists. They are all trained and certified in what they do. Case supervisors at ABC, for instance, must have an average of 4 years of experience in the field. Behavioural therapists, on the other hand, had undergone a total of 500 hours a month of training and supervision monthly.

There is a huge lack of trained therapists in Malaysia, particularly in the method of ABA therapy, which is currently considered the ‘gold standard’ in autism treatment due to its success in reintegrating a child back into school and society, backed up with over 20 studies to prove the method’s effectiveness and success in developing a child’s skills.” – Charlene Marie Samuel.

Autism & Applied Behavior Analysis

Autism is a developmental disability that affects how an individual communicates and interacts with others. There is no known single cause of autism. Signs typically surface during early childhood and affect individuals differently and to varying degrees.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that involves persistent challenges in social interaction, speech and nonverbal communication, and restricted/repetitive behaviors. The effects of ASD and the severity of symptoms are different in each person.” – American Psychiatric Association (APA) [1]

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a system of treatment that teaches a set of desired behaviours through a system of rewards and consequences. Developed by Dr O. Ivar Lovaas (1927-2010) in 1960 from the branch of psychology known as behaviourism, ABA Therapy has been around for more than 40 years. Dr O. Ivar Lovaas’s studies indicated that children who received early intensive ABA made dramatic gains in development. [2]

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a type of therapy that focuses on improving specific behaviors, such as social skills, communication, reading, and academics as well as adaptive learning skills, such as fine motor dexterity, hygiene, grooming, domestic capabilities, punctuality, and job competence. ABA is effective for children and adults with psychological disorders in a variety of settings, including schools, workplaces, homes, and clinics.” – Psychology Today [3]

Research continues to suggest that early diagnosis of and interventions for autism are more likely to have major long-term positive effects on symptoms and later skills [4]. They have been scientifically proven to help children and adults modify undesirable behaviours and develop to their full potential. What ABC thus aims to accomplish with its programs is to address skill deficits faced by children with autism in all developmental areas in a fun and rewarding way.
