Spotlight: Apadilangit

Apadilangit, also known as Universe Awareness Malaysia, is an educational organisation that teaches astronomy to children and young adults. Established in 2016, Apadilangit aims to raise space awareness among Malaysians. 

Co-founded by Hafez Murtza and Amirul Hazim, Apadilangit strives to spark children’s interest in astronomy and inform them that there are indeed numerous career opportunities that fall into the space science category. 

Apadilangit organises space camps that teach various interesting themes on space science and space exploration. Their camps cater primarily for kids and teens from preschool, primary and secondary school as well as colleges and university. 

Through its space camps, Apadilangit offers hands-on experiences that can foster their love of learning and everything that’s science-related. The main aim of these camps is to stimulate the next generation of space-oriented scientists.

Camps like these are vitalThey help children see that space and science career are indeed attainable. Also, they broaden children’s minds that they later develop a sense of global citizenship. And, at the same time, these camps also teach that science can be fun and inspiring, too – Hafez Murtza

Apadilangit not only organises space camps but also develops space-science related product. Apadilangit has thus far developed two products; Impact Dome and Light Sound Device. 

Impact Dome is a mobile planetarium for the Visually Impaired. It is a miniatured sphere in geodesic style consisting of several triangular and hexagonal segments joined together.

The dome is printed with the tactile constellation for each side – for the northern sky and the southern sky. Triangles can be placed in any segment of the dome to represent changes of constellation location due to time and latitude.

Light Sound Device is a tool developed for those who are visually impaired and auditorily oriented to experience the variation of light intensity during a solar eclipse in real-time, through sound. 

Sound changes based on the intensity of the light. During the eclipse, the pitch will change according to the brightness of the sun as the moon covers the sun.

Light Sound Device is a redeveloped device taken from the Harvard Astronomy Lab and IAU International Astronomical Union Light Sound Team.
