Spotlight: Borders, The Curve

Beyond Books

The first Borders bookstore was founded in 1971 in Ann Arbor, Michigan as a bookshop that sells used books. Fast-forward a few decades, Borders became the second-largest bricks-and-mortar US bookstore chain.

Borders was one of the pioneers that helped define the age of the book megastore business. Sadly, due to years of increased competition; pitting against internet-savvy competitors who then began selling large numbers of best sellers online, Borders bookstores across the US had no choice but to close its doors for good in September 2011.

Thankfully, Borders Malaysia wasn’t affected. Unlike all Borders bookstores in the US, which were directly owned by the company, Borders bookstores in Malaysia are wholly-owned and operated by Berjaya Books Sdn Bhd; a totally separate entity.

The first Borders bookstore in Malaysia was opened in 2005 at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur. Today, there are over eight Borders bookstores in Malaysia. One of which is at The Curve Shopping Mall, Mutiara Damansara.

The Curve Shopping Mall

Located directly opposite IKEA, getting to The Curve Shopping Mall is easier now than it ever has been. There’s an MRT station nearby and there are buses that can get you to the Curve or IKEA Mutiara Damansara from possibly anywhere in the Klang Valley. Plan your route accordingly as there are many types of buses. There’s MRT Feeder Bus. There’s Rapid KL Bus, and there’s PJ City Bus. Well, there’s Grab.

Borders Bookstore

Situated on the ground floor, the bookstore offers a relaxed and cosy atmosphere. Greeting customers at the entrance are tables displaying best-selling titles of all kinds. Take a few more steps forward you’ll see bright displays to help you choose your next read. With bookshelves spanning the entire store, you are sure to find something you like at Borders, The Curve.

And if you’re someone who likes to browse in peace and quiet, this bookstore is the place for you. The staff are friendly and helpful. Can’t find what you’re looking for? There’s an information counter in the middle of the bookstore. They’ll respond to your inquiries and will be more than happy to assist you.

In addition to its huge selection of books and magazines, there’s a Starbucks cafe. Make your purchases and then curl up in their cosy sofa seats with some food and a beverage and start reading. Borders also runs regular events, including storytimes and meet-and-greets with authors. Be sure to check out their Facebook and Instagram for updates on such events.

Children’s Section

What we like most about Borders is its children’s section. Borders has a large, dedicated space for children. Whether your little one is looking for his/her favourite Harry Potter book or something from generations past, this is where he’ll find it.

The children’s section offers a wide selection of children’s books from the best-known publishers, offering parents more than enough options to choose a book or two for their little ones. Usborne Books and Ladybird Books are our favourites.

Stood at the back of the children’s section is a child-sized table and chairs. They have been purposely set up for parents who may want to read aloud to their kids. Thank you, Borders, for providing such a space for our kids, and above all, for making your bookstore very kid-friendly! Borders, The Curve is indeed Beyond Books; the perfect place to inspire and amuse young readers.
