Spotlight: Planetarium Negara, Kuala Lumpur

Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Planetarium Negara is the national planetarium of Malaysia. The facility was officially opened by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir bin Mohamad, on 7 February 1994.

Set on a forested hill between the Bird Park and the National Museum, Planetarium Negara has been meticulously designed to resemble a mosque, hence the blue dome.

Planetarium Negara showcases all things space science exhibits. From the spacesuit of the first Malaysian astronaut in glass cases, cutaway space capsule, Rovers on Mars to a Viking spacecraft’s engine. Our favourite is a section that features a mock-up interior of the Space Lab.

Space Pod is a new feature. Space Pod lets visitors experience the different planets in the solar system through an immersive 3D ride. The Space Theatre, on the other hand, shows an hourly film that’s mostly space-related. The film will be projected on the interior roof of the dome. Space shows are shown throughout the day. Be sure to double-check with their schedule here

While the entrance to the exhibit is free, a ticket for Space Theatre is priced at RM12/adult and RM6/child. Adult with MyKad pays RM8 and child with MyKid pays RM4. Planetarium Negara is highly educational and fun for both adults and kids alike.

As with any planetarium, Planetarium Negara seeks educate the general public about space science through its exciting exhibits and shows in the facility. For an overview of the whole space exploration experience, Planetarium Negara is a great place to introduce children to the wonder of space exploration.
